Requirements for Volunteering at STM

St. Thomas More must provide a safe environment for children and youth. We hold ALL adults who work with minors to a code of conduct that is Christ-centered and professional. The Safe Environment Program implemented by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge requires us to evaluate the background of all paid personnel and volunteers whose duties include ongoing, unsupervised contact with minors.

The Diocese of Baton Rouge has adopted Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. Any one who wants to volunteer at St. Thomas More must be in compliance with this policy. ALL requirements must be met in order to volunteer.

The Diocese is still transitioning to a new system for volunteers to apply for Child Protection Certification. In the meantime, you may still follow these steps to become certified to volunteer at STM:

When volunteering or participating in STM events, please remember that due to safety and liability coverage, we cannot allow any other children or siblings who are not St. Thomas More students to attend.

Spring Pep Rally

The annual spring pep rally, sponsored by the Student Council, was held Friday, March 15. Fourth through 8th grade students attended the celebration, which honored STM’s 5th-8th grade spring athletic teams including volleyball, basketball, and track & field.

Student Council officers Emmie C., Edrick C., Sadie O., and Thomas W. served as MCs for the event. All spring varsity and junior varsity teams were introduced to the crowd to open the pep rally. Later, individual members of the 7th and 8th grade teams were introduced. Spokesmen for the eighth grade varsity teams included Hattie O., volleyball; Jorgé I., basketball; and Shelby C., track & field.

The highlight of the event was the traditional volleyball game played between the 8th grade basketball boys and the 8th grade volleyball girls. Coaches for the teams included Hattie O. and Evan N. for the Fantastic Fairies volleyball team and Jaxon W. and Xavier B. for the Superhero basketball team. The game was exciting and closely contested, but the girls stood victorious in the end. The boys did pull out a win in the final game. Tyler B. and Kaitlyn R. provided expert commentary throughout the game, while Sadie O. served as the head official, with Meghan B. and Thomas W. serving as line judges.

Adding to the spirit of the pep rally were the STM Cheerleaders and our amazing Eagle mascot, Sophia R. The pep rally ended with the traditional “What Time Is It” cheer performed by all the pep rally participants and led by Hattie O. and Hayden I. The pep rally was a spirited and fun event that celebrated our spring sports teams and the fans who support them. It is always a much anticipated event for the students, especially the 8th graders.

Nurse's Notes

DISEASE OF THE WEEK: Spring Allergies Spring allergy season is the time of year when the pollen count is at its highest, usually March through May. Allergy symptoms vary from mild to severe and include: itchy, red, watery eyes; sneezing; rashes/hives and itchy skin; and respiratory symptoms/wheezing. If your child suffers from seasonal allergy symptoms, now is the time to start taking daily preventative medications like antihistamines, eye drops, and inhalers (if prescribed). Installing new air filters in your car and home and washing your hands, face, and clothing after going outdoors is also helpful. Ask a physician for treatment recommendations if symptoms are persistent.  An allergy specialist can help those that have asthma or suffer from severe symptoms during allergy season.

UNIFORMS NEEDED IN FIRST AID: Gently used uniforms are kept in First Aid for emergencies. The following items are needed if you have donations: Shorts for boys in waist sizes 30-40, undershorts for girls in all sizes (children and adult). If your child has borrowed any clothes from the school nurse, please wash and return them at your earliest convenience. Most of the clothes are marked with “STM” on the inside.
