Nurse's Notes

There have been some reported cases of fifth’s disease at our school. Fifth disease is a common childhood rash caused by a virus called parvovirus B19. It is also known as “slapped cheeks” because it often starts as a dramatic rash on the cheeks.

What are the symptoms of fifth disease?
People may be infected and infectious without ever having any signs or symptoms. Early symptoms may include low-grade fever, runny nose, muscles aches, and headache. In the next 4-14 days, a bright red rash appears on the cheeks, followed by a rash on the arms, trunk, and legs. The rash on the trunk is a flat, lace-like rash. The rash may disappear and reappear after exposure to heat for weeks; once the rash appears, the child usually no longer feels ill. Unlike other illnesses, children are NO LONGER CONTAGIOUS once the rash appears. Adults that contract fifth disease may have
painful, swollen joints with or without other symptoms.

How is fifth disease spread?
Fifth disease is spread from person-to-person during the early part of the illness by direct contact with the respiratory secretions, such as drainage from the nose and throat from an infected person. A healthcare provider can usually make a diagnosis of fifth disease based on the symptoms and appearance of the rash.

When do students need to stay home from school?
Fifth disease is usually a mild illness that does not require medical care or school exclusion. Generalcomfort measures may help with early symptoms. Children need to stay home from school if they feel ill or if fever is present. They can attend school with the rash. Once infected, fifth disease should produce lifelong immunity and 50% of adults have immunity against the virus.

Special considerations:
Pregnant women or people with certain blood disorders or immune deficiencies may require medical attention if infected. Infection during early pregnancy carries a small risk to the unborn child. Pregnant women that may have been exposed to the virus need to notify their OB/GYN. A blood test is available to determine if an individual has immunity to parvovirus B19. If a pregnant woman does not have immunity against the virus, she will be closely followed by her physician.

How do you control the spread?
There is no vaccine available, and frequent hand washing is the best prevention. Our school policy is that students must stay home from school for 24 hours after fever subsides before returning to school. A temperature of 100.0 is considered a fever. Please review effective hand washing procedures with your child and encourage covering coughs and sneezes.

Please feel free to contact Nurse Rochelle with any questions at 225-272-3072 or [email protected]
